1967 Special Election In District V

The January 1967 District V special election was held in Moskiprovac following the sudden death of Marko Cabraja, Senator and leader of the Civic Renewal Front (CRF). Cabraja had won the seat in 1962 after Vjetrusa incumbent Zoran Banit declined re-election; his death removed the CRF’s most visible leader in the industrial commuter belt surrounding Vijrje.

The contest mattered beyond District V. Moskiprovac had been a CRF–Blue Dawn battleground, but no candidate won a majority. Zarkolic Plavek of Vjetrusa captured the seat with 32.4% after the liberal and statist vote split, giving Vjetrusa its second Senate seat alongside Haret Trn in Viskogorje and reducing the CRF bloc from four seats to three. Assembly Chair Ante Brov, who had succeeded Leon Rukavin in 1966, faced a strengthened nationalist-conservative bench as his government prepared the 1967 District Governance Act.

Candidates

Zarkolic Plavek stood for Vjetrusa. A labour organiser born in Vijrje in 1923, Plavek had built a factory-floor network in Moskiprovac’s manufacturing wards. Party materials combined calls for protective tariffs against Kaskivian imports with criticism of Blue Dawn’s post-Treaty focus on southern settlement and trade liberalisation. Plavek later described the race as an opening created by a fractured centre-left vote.

Goran Vrban stood for Blue Dawn. The party’s District V committee nominated Vrban, a hydroelectric project administrator who had worked under Senator Nika Radman, to defend Blue Dawn’s industrial development record. He campaigned on continued federal investment in the Vijrje commuter corridor and placed second with 31.0%.

Vlatka Sasayana stood for the Civic Renewal Front. With CRF leadership in caretaker mode after Cabraja’s death, Sasayana ran as a free-market liberal emphasising agricultural credit programmes Cabraja had championed. Grieving CRF voters split between her candidacy and abstention; she received 27.5%.

Mirjam Dumancic stood for the Sons of Kresimir. Dumancic contested the seat on SoK leader Davor Banit’s hardline platform opposing the Brod Moravice settlement and directing federal industrial policy away from Treaty-era concessions. She placed fourth with 9.1%.

District V (Moskiprovac)

Plavek’s plurality win — the lowest share recorded for a seated Senator in Moskiprovac to that date — depended on the near-even split between Vrban and Sasayana. Factory wards that had backed Cabraja in 1962 divided along Treaty and tariff lines; Vjetrusa’s consolidated nationalist base proved sufficient to finish first without a runoff mechanism.
