2018 Kaskivian General Election

The 2018 Kaskivian general election removed Prime Minister Elena Fiori after sixteen years of Kaskivian Change Alliance (KCA) government and installed Vera Donini of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the first centre-left premier since Giancarlo Totti left office in 1978. The SDP won a plurality of 86 seats; Donini formed a minority government with the Green-Left Coalition for Progress (GLCP) after two independent MPs broke an initial 99–99 deadlock between left and right blocs.

The campaign unfolded against voter fatigue with Fiori’s energy-centred diplomacy and allegations of preferential gas tariffs granted to Maj Holdings. Opposition parties argued that the KCA had failed to invest in digital infrastructure and that non-pipeline regions had stagnated compared with industrial centres in Kresimiria such as Kromine. Donini ran on the slogan “Beyond the Pipeline,” proposing renewable energy investment and a partial pivot away from raw gas exports. The Kresimirian Digital Vigilance Act became a salient foreign-policy issue: Donini opposed cross-border digital surveillance, while Fiori’s critics said the KCA had been too accommodating toward the Stov administration on border enforcement.

Fiori’s 2016 suspension of KCA MP Speranzio Vivaldi for criticising fossil-fuel policy later affected government formation. Vivaldi retained Finicoli Woods as an independent in 2018 and voted to confirm the SDP–Green coalition. Aleix Monet, another independent, abstained. The Kaskivian Flame under Rodolfo Corta reached 30 seats, enough to align with the KCA in a right-of-centre bloc but insufficient to form a government without cross-bench support.

Immediately after the election, the GLCP split over economic priorities. Founder Icilio Lana favoured redistribution and labour reform; the moderate ecological faction led by Luca Bianchi prioritised climate legislation aligned with Donini’s “Green Steppe” programme. Bianchi ousted Lana from the leadership in late 2018; Lana was expelled from the party and sat as an independent for Ateneo North while the GLCP remained in coalition with the SDP under Bianchi.

Parties

The Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by Vera Donini since 2016, campaigned on economic modernisation, digital infrastructure, and a managed green transition. Donini had served as shadow minister for the economy under Simeone Silla and published academic work on the “Gas Curse” during the Luppino years. The SDP gained 21 seats and 10.1 percentage points, its best result to date.

The Kaskivian Change Alliance (KCA), led by incumbent Prime Minister Elena Fiori, defended sixteen years of pipeline diplomacy and national sovereignty. Fiori emphasised stability and the protection of gas-sector employment. The party lost 27 seats, its worst result since its 2002 founding, as suburban and urban voters shifted toward the SDP or new right-wing alternatives.

The Kaskivian Flame, led by Rodolfo Corta, doubled its 2010 seat count to 30. Corta opposed urban environmental subsidies, Kresimirian refugee flows at Porta Franca, and what he termed the neglect of eastern grain producers. The Flame’s gains contributed to the even split between left and right parliamentary blocs before independent votes resolved the deadlock.

The Green-Left Coalition for Progress (GLCP), led by Icilio Lana, increased its representation to 13 seats on a platform combining eco-socialism, universal basic income advocacy, and green taxation. Lana entered government as a junior partner; the leadership dispute that followed the election divided the party for six years until Lana’s return in 2024.
