Kresimiria Free League

Free League

The Free League was a short-lived far-left Kaskivian party formed in 1994 after the court-ordered dissolution of the Radical Socialist Party (RSP). It was not a continuation of the USP or a merger of the entire left; it was an emergency vehicle for RSP parliamentarians who needed a legal banner to contest the 1994 General Election.

Gerino Melfi led the party into the election, winning 14 seats (7.0%). Aleix Monet retained his Fronte Superiore South seat under the Free League banner. The party briefly backed Vulpiano Luppino’s New National Voice (NNV) in a minority coalition arrangement, but remained deeply unstable — torn by internal ideological conflict and financial problems — until it dissolved into bankruptcy in 2001.

Simeone Silla had already founded the modern Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2000 to replace the collapsing USP. Monet joined the SDP after the Free League’s collapse; Melfi left national politics and did not contest the 2002 election.

Not to be confused with the Free Agrarians, an unrelated agrarian party that contested earlier elections such as 1970.
