Jakov Balic (1912–1998) was a Kresimirian automotive engineer and industrial designer, best known as the chief architect of the KM-4 “People’s Car” produced by Krasja (then Kresimirian Motors).
Balic became a working-class hero in the Divine Republic of Kresimiria during the 1950s. His utilitarian design philosophy perfectly matched the state’s demand for rugged, mass-producible vehicles capable of traversing the poor infrastructure of rural districts like Viskogorje and District IX.
Career
Balic began his career as a mechanic in the military motor pools during the Unification War. Following the establishment of the Republic, he joined the newly formed Kresimirian Motors in Novi Otonik.
When Chancellor Kresimir Kresimirovic II issued the “Decree on National Mobility” in the early 1950s, Balic led the engineering team tasked with creating a vehicle for the masses. He famously stripped away all non-essential features—including radios, interior heating, and complex suspension systems—to ensure the vehicle could be repaired with basic tools by untrained citizens. The resulting KM-4 launched in 1956 and became the most ubiquitous vehicle in Kresimirian history.
During the Blue Dawn era of Ljubo Sanjakorin in the 1980s, state media frequently held Balic up as the ideal “Republican Worker”—a man who prioritised national utility over personal luxury. He retired from Krasja in 1982 and lived quietly in Novi Otonik until his death in 1998.
