Markus Steinheil is a former Kruhlstutt politician who led The Liberals following the abrupt resignation of Maximilien Roth in early 1999.
Steinheil inherited the leadership just before the 1999 General Election, held amid fallout from the 1998 Cetingrad Steelworks Incident across the border in Kresimiria. Without Roth’s charismatic presence — and with The Liberals tainted by association with the industrial tragedy — the party suffered a catastrophic collapse under Steinheil’s leadership.
Prime Minister Sandro Kepler nevertheless maintained his coalition with Steinheil’s Liberals, directing most negative press at Roth’s legacy while making concessions to the Riverine Front on Lake Vokavovic border security. Steinheil led the party into the 2004 election, by which time The Liberals had entered a five-year exile from relevance until their revival under Robby Scholl.
