Otto Bloch is a Kresimirian labour organiser from Bistrica who publicly exposed the financial malfeasance of Mayor Gabriel “The Bear” Ekdahl in 1991, triggering the scandal that ended Ekdahl’s mayoralty and Northern Power’s local monopoly.
1991 confrontation
Bloch, a younger reform-minded figure within Bistrica’s mining syndicates, questioned where union dues were flowing under Ekdahl’s protection-racket municipal tariffs. He accused the Mayor’s office of severe financial malfeasance at a rally outside the Iron Citadel. That evening Ekdahl confronted Bloch in a crowded tavern and beat him severely — fracturing his skull and causing internal bleeding before dozens of witnesses.
The assault forced police to arrest the sitting mayor and opened a federal investigation into Bistrica’s illicit tariff system. Northern Power’s national leadership expelled Ekdahl; Bloch survived and became a symbol of rank-and-file rebellion against NP strongman politics in District IV.
Legacy
Bloch is cited alongside Darko Horvat’s 1992 Vjetrusa mayoral upset as proof that Bistrica’s extraction economy could reject outright gangster governance — even when Sinj’s central government had long tolerated Ekdahl’s tax blockades as regionalist heroism.
