The Republic v. Lanzone (1996) was the criminal prosecution of former United Socialist Party (USP) leader Bettino Lanzone after investigators uncovered the Granary Porta Franca Disbursements ledger — a multi-million-KSD campaign slush fund and kickback scheme tied to logistics brokers at Porta Franca.
Background
Following the USP’s 1994 electoral collapse, a tip from a former party treasurer led federal prosecutors to raid USP headquarters in San Branik. A safe behind a false wall in Lanzone’s office held the ledger documenting embezzled campaign subsidies and “expediting fees” extracted from Kresimirian brokers. Parliament lifted Lanzone’s immunity; he was arrested in 1995.
Holding
Before the Federal Criminal Chamber of the Tribunal of San Branik in 1996, Lanzone was convicted of fraud, racketeering, and embezzlement and sentenced to four years. He served two after administrative leniency negotiated by remaining allies. Cassation leave was denied.
Legacy
