Uhrental is a deep-valley industrial city in the Alandir Confederacy, and the seat of the canton of the same name. Nestled between steep Severni ridges west of the federal capital Aland, it is the Confederacy’s primary centre for precision optics, surveying instruments, and micro-mechanical components — the quieter, more technical counterpart to Aland’s luxury clockwork culture.
Where Aland sells invitation-only watches, Uhrental sells the glass and mounts that make continental surveillance, alpine navigation, and industrial metrology possible. The city’s guilds are famously secretive, communally regulated, and indifferent to the politics of their customers.
Geography
Uhrental occupies a narrow glacial trough at roughly 1,180 meters. Winters are long and shadowed; the valley floor receives little direct sun for much of the year, which historically favoured cold-storage workshops and later climate-controlled cleanrooms. A single rail spur and two switchback roads connect the city to Aland and to the financial clearing houses of Neumark.
Avalanche galleries and avalanche-shed tunnels dominate the approaches. The municipal militia treats the valley mouth as a secondary defensive choke, subordinate only to Festung Vrh and the southern border gates.
Optics and precision industry
Uhrental’s economy rests on multi-generation craft guilds that reorganised in the mid-20th century into tightly audited cooperatives. The city produces:
- High-resolution optical lenses and mirror blanks for telescopes, rangefinders, and industrial sensors
- Surveying theodolites and alpine cartographic kits used across Nastavak
- Micro-mechanical mounts and shutter assemblies sold to luxury houses in Aland, including suppliers to Ravel Dalin
Export contracts are negotiated at the cantonal level. Buyers include Kruhlstutt semiconductor firms, Kaskivian logistics cartographers, and — despite diplomatic frost — Kresimirian agencies. Components from Uhrental are widely believed to appear in border drones operated by the Council for Internal Affairs, purchased through cut-out intermediaries so that formal Alandir neutrality is never formally breached.
Society and politics
Uhrental politics are quieter than Kambelquell’s dam-square theatre but no less protective of local autonomy. The cantonal council prioritises apprenticeship quotas, export licensing, and air-quality standards against SeverMin smog drifting north from Bistrica. Guild masters sit as observers on most major referenda, and federal attempts to centralise optics export licensing have repeatedly failed on the valley floor.
