Vecenslav Kastelec is a former Kresimirian politician who served as Mayor of Varazdinske from 1996–2010 under Blue Dawn. Hand-picked by Senator Kresimir Bukowski, he governed through the explosive growth of Marin University Varazdinske (MUV) and the city’s transformation into a hardware-manufacturing hub centred on RiG.
Tenure
Kastelec won the 1996 mayoral election with 52.4% on a hardline “native defence” platform against secularising student culture. Once in office he gerrymandered municipal zoning to dilute the University Quarter’s voting power and deployed the city guard against unauthorised campus protests — policies that pleased older manufacturing workers but poisoned relations with MUV faculty.
His fourteen-year rule ended when Blue Dawn nominated the pro-business Elena Matic in 2010, shifting Varazdinske from cultural warfare back to tax breaks and freight highways. Kastelec did not seek re-election; historians treat his mayoralty as the peak of Varazdinske’s “Town vs. Gown” conflict before Matic’s RiG-centred pragmatism.
Legacy
Kastelec remains a reference point in District VIII debates over student housing and municipal policing. CRF and MUV-aligned activists cite his zoning orders as authoritarian; Blue Dawn old guard in the Northern Power–adjacent manufacturing wards still praise him for “protecting Varazdinske identity” against campus radicalism.
