Following the BNA’s consolidation of power, most opposition parties were banned. The remaining opposition parties, including the Front for Peace and the Anti-Nationalist League, boycotted the elections, citing widespread voter intimidation. Metzger ran virtually unopposed, with the “Invalid” vote representing the only form of protest.
