Kresimiria 1948 Boskenmark Presidential Election

1948 Boskenmark Presidential Election

The 1948 Boskenmark Presidential Election — commonly called the “Khaki Election” — was held in two rounds and ended twenty-six years of rule by President Stefan Hartschnell. General Nielz Metzger of the Bosken National Alliance (BNA) defeated Vice President Oscar Hantzsch of the Civic Union (CU) in the runoff with 52.4% of the vote.

The campaign polarised a Federation exhausted by the Silent War and perceived economic stagnation. Metzger, a wounded veteran of the Battle of the Brod Ford, argued that Hartschnell’s Safe Harbor policy had been too passive and that the CU leadership was too aged to manage post-war reconstruction. Hartschnell died of a heart attack in his office on 12 October 1948 during the campaign. Hantzsch assumed the CU candidacy and the acting presidency but could not hold the first-round lead; Metzger’s first-round share of 35.4% rose to a runoff majority after the IP and Socialist candidates were eliminated. Turnout reached 84%, the highest recorded in a Boskenmark presidential contest. Metzger’s victory ended the Hartschnell era; the Civic Union dissolved within several years, and Metzger moved quickly to ban the socialist opposition and intensify covert support for BRC-21.

Parties

  • Bosken National Alliance (BNA) — Leader: Nielz Metzger. Honigberschmidt had hand-picked Metzger as the BNA standard-bearer before his death. The party campaigned on total pressure against Kresimiria, expanded military spending, and the rejection of Hartschnell’s diplomatic ambiguity. Metzger drew on army loyalty and nationalist resentment over the 1942 assassination of Lev Ruka; BNA materials framed the CU as collaborators with Sinj.
  • Civic Union (CU) — Leader: Oscar Hantzsch (replacing Stefan Hartschnell). Hartschnell had intended to seek a fourth term; after his death Hantzsch inherited a ticket associated with continuity and civil liberty. The CU defended Safe Harbor, constitutional governance, and trade ties with Kruhlstutt. Hantzsch won the first round with 46.6% but lost the runoff as BNA voters consolidated and disillusioned CU supporters stayed home.
  • Imperial Party (IP) — Leader: Dominic Bohnisch. The monarchist vote collapsed to 12.3% as conservative voters shifted toward the BNA’s harder nationalism. Bohnisch did not advance to the second round; IP spokesmen urged supporters to abstain rather than back either Metzger or Hantzsch.
  • Socialist Party — Leader: Lars Aach. Aach achieved his best presidential result at 5.7%, campaigning against militarism and for workers’ control in Rudarja. Metzger’s victory led to the Decree on Internal Stability, which banned the party and drove Aach underground — he would later found the League of Red Radicals.
