The 1988 Tear Gas Final was an abandoned Republic League football cup final played between the establishment-backed FC Sinj and the rebel Bosken club NK Moravice United on May 14, 1988. The match is one of the most notorious sporting events in Kresimirian history, highlighting the severe ethnic and political tensions during the late era of Chancellor Ljubo Sanjakorin.
Background
By 1988, Sanjakorin’s Blue Dawn government was facing mounting economic pressure and increasing unrest in District X. NK Moravice United, a club based in the occupied southern territory and heavily supported by ethnic Boskens, had miraculously reached the cup final against FC Sinj, the wealthy team traditionally favoured by the Chancellory and the Civil Order Force.
The match was viewed as a proxy war. State media framed it as a demonstration of Republican unity, while Bosken supporters viewed it as a rare opportunity to humiliate the Kresimirian establishment on national television.
The Match and Riot
The final was held at the National Stadium in Sinj. Tensions were high before kickoff, with heavy police presence separating the travelling Moravice supporters from the FC Sinj ultras.
In the 68th minute, with the score tied 1-1, a highly controversial penalty was awarded to FC Sinj. Moravice United players surrounded the referee in protest, and fights broke out on the pitch. Simultaneously, violence erupted in the stands as FC Sinj ultras breached the segregation barriers.
The Civil Order Force responded by firing massive quantities of tear gas directly into the Moravice United supporters’ section, causing a stampede toward the exits. The gas quickly drifted onto the pitch, blinding players and officials. The referee abandoned the match in the 73rd minute as players fled down the tunnel to escape the fumes.
Aftermath
The Council for Education, which oversaw the Republic League, officially blamed “hooliganism by southern agitators” for the violence. NK Moravice United was heavily fined, and FC Sinj was awarded the cup victory by forfeit—a decision that sparked three days of rioting in District X.
The “Tear Gas Final” became a rallying cry for the Bosken Liberation Front (BLF) and marked the end of any pretence that the Republic League could serve as a unifying cultural institution. NK Moravice United was temporarily suspended from the top flight the following season, cementing the deep animosity between the two clubs that persists in modern Holy Derby matches.
