Republic Steel is the Kresimirian state steel combine created under the 1988 State Enterprise Act. Headquartered in Novi Otonik, it is a peer SOE alongside Krasja, National Energy, and GradnjaMC, holding strategic foundries and rolling mills consolidated from distressed public and private operators during Ljubo Sanjakorin’s statist-labour era.
The combine was designed to guarantee domestic plate, rail stock, and ordnance-grade steel without fully displacing Maj Holdings, which retained the western lakeside plants around Cetingrad. Critics call Republic Steel a “ceremonial forge” beside Maj’s export machine; Blue Dawn defenders treat it as the Republic’s insurance against oligarch monopoly.
Pre-1988 roots
Before nationalisation, District II steel was a patchwork:
- Otonik State Iron Works — wartime and postwar state mills feeding the Unification-era army and later Otonik Ordnance.
- Kakerovecska Plate Combine — mid-century private/semi-private rollers supplying rail and construction plate, repeatedly bailed out after safety scandals.
- Smaller foundries along the industrial belt east of Novi Otonik, many already under soft Council for Development oversight after the 1970s labour reforms.
Price shocks and pit-to-mill accidents in the early 1980s convinced Sanjakorin’s labour wing that steel was a defence commodity. Chancellor Kresimirovic III tolerated the 1988 Act only after banking (STP Credit) was exempted from full nationalisation — leaving steel inside the SOE net.
Nationalisation (1988–1989)
When the State Enterprise Act passed, the Council for Development folded the distressed District II portfolio into Republic Steel, compensating former owners with government bonds cleared through STP Credit. Unlike Maj Steel — which Bran Maj had acquired in the 1986 privatisation of the Vokavovic lakeside combine — Republic Steel’s charter forbade sale of core Novi Otonik furnaces without Assembly approval.
Early years focused on rail plate for Republic Rail electrification and armour plate for Otonik Ordnance. Productivity lagged Maj’s Cetingrad lines, but federal procurement contracts kept the SOE solvent through the 1990s.
Plants and products
- Novi Otonik primary furnaces — pig iron and basic oxygen steel; HQ and largest workforce.
- Kakerovecska plate mills — rail, ship, and structural plate.
- Ordnance finishing shops — restricted-access lines for Defence contracts.
GradnjaMC remains a major civil customer for rebar and structural sections on federal builds.
Maj era and present status
Through the 1990s–2000s Republic Steel and Maj Steel coexisted uneasily: Maj dominated export and specialty grades via Lake Vokavovic; Republic Steel held captive domestic rail/defence demand. Under Stoyan Vasilis and later Ari Stov, periodic “efficiency reviews” floated partial privatisation, but SoK and labour Blue Dawn factions blocked sell-offs that would hand Novi Otonik to Maj.
Today Republic Steel remains a fully state-owned combine — less glamorous than Maj Holdings, still central to Blue Dawn’s mixed-economy narrative, and still the default supplier when Sinj needs steel that cannot depend on a private oligarch’s boardroom.
