Kresimiria Republic Steel

Republic Steel

Republic Steel is the Kresimirian state steel combine created under the 1988 State Enterprise Act. Nationalised and re-nationalised in 1988–1989, it operates as a peer SOE alongside Krasja and National Energy, holding strategic foundries and rolling mills seized from failing private operators during Ljubo Sanjakorin’s statist-labour consolidation.

The combine was intended to check oligarchic concentration in heavy industry without fully displacing Maj Holdings, which retained many western and specialty plants. Republic Steel’s mills in Kakerovecska supply rail stock, plate, and ordnance-grade inputs for Republic Rail and Otonik Ordnance, though critics argue the SOE remains less efficient than its private rivals.

History

Sanjakorin’s government identified steel as a matter of national defence after repeated price shocks and safety scandals in the private sector. When the State Enterprise Act passed in 1988, the Council for Development moved quickly to consolidate distressed mills into Republic Steel, compensating former owners with government bonds issued through STP Credit.

Unlike Maj Steel in Cetingrad, which Maj Holdings had acquired in 1986, Republic Steel’s portfolio centred on the older state-run complexes of Novi Otonik and allied District II plants. The SOE never achieved Maj’s export reach, but it guaranteed baseline domestic capacity through the 1990s industrial boom and remains a symbol of Blue Dawn’s mixed-economy model.
