Kresimiria 1939 Boskenmark Presidential Election

1939 Boskenmark Presidential Election

The 1939 Boskenmark Presidential Election returned President Stefan Hartschnell for a third term with 58.9% of the vote, held on the same day as the 1939 Federal Council Election. The result confirmed the Civic Union’s hold on the executive, but the aggregated opposition vote rose to over 40% — the highest share Hartschnell would face before the 1948 election.

The campaign took place during the deepening Silent War. BRC-21 operations in Moraviskameja, Kresimirian counter-insurgency, and border skirmishes along the River Brod dominated public debate. Hartschnell’s refusal to commit the army to a second conventional war frustrated revanchist officers, who argued that Safe Harbor sanctuary for figures such as Lev Ruka in Vost would never recover Moraviskameja without open rearmament. The newly founded Bosken National Alliance (BNA), led by Unification War veteran Marc Honigberschmidt, entered presidential politics for the first time and won 15.4%. The IP under Casper Kornhausel held 22.1% in the Pravoslavic See and Vost. Lars Aach’s Socialist Party polled 3.6%, retaining its base in Rudarja.

Parties

  • Civic Union (CU) — Leader: Stefan Hartschnell (incumbent). The CU campaigned on continuity: Safe Harbor support for BRC-21, limited rearmament, and the civil liberties guaranteed by the 1925 Constitution. Hartschnell presented the Federation as a stable alternative to both Kresimirian aggression and domestic militarism, though his vote share fell for a third consecutive election.
  • Imperial Party (IP) — Leader: Casper Kornhausel. Kornhausel consolidated the monarchist vote in conservative cantons, relying on Pravoslavic aristocrats and federal-district landowners who opposed both Hartschnell’s republicanism and Honigberschmidt’s aggressive nationalism. The IP platform favoured ceremonial restoration of the Vosti line rather than the BNA’s demand for immediate rearmament.
  • Bosken National Alliance (BNA) — Leader: Marc Honigberschmidt. Registered in 1937, the BNA rejected Hartschnell’s gradualism and the IP’s ghost-emperor nostalgia. Honigberschmidt demanded federal rearmament, Pravoslavic social conservatism, and the eventual “liberation” of District X without provoking a conventional war Kresimiria would win — a doctrine he called strategic patience. The 15.4% result established revanchist nationalism as a permanent presidential force.
  • Socialist Party — Leader: Lars Aach. Aach’s party combined agrarian socialism and industrial syndicalism, campaigning for land reform and miners’ rights. Hartschnell permitted the opposition candidacy; the party’s support remained confined largely to Rudarja and the western industrial hills.
