Sandro Kepler stepped down as Prime Minister after his wife was killed in a car crash in Kaskiv. After an internal Kruhlstutter Union leadership election, Kepler’s Minister of Finance, Markus Pilcz became Prime Minister, and precedent, immediately called elections.
The devastating humiliation of the Kruhlstutter Union in 2004 was largely attributed to the severe miscalculations of their newly appointed leader, Markus Pilcz. Following the sudden resignation of Sandro Kepler, Pilcz was hastily elevated to the premiership and immediately called a snap election. An uncharismatic economist, Pilcz failed to project stability as his party engaged in bitter public infighting. He was completely overshadowed by Liberal leader Robby Scholl, resulting in a catastrophic 55-seat loss that permanently ended the KU’s era of absolute center-right supremacy.
Capitalizing on the internal exhaustion of the incumbent Kruhlstutter Union (KU) and the booming tech economy of the capital, the pro-business Liberals achieved a historic breakthrough. Led by charismatic former tech executive Robby Scholl, the Liberals surpassed the KU in seats for the first time ever (121 to 64). Forced into the junior role of a center-right coalition, the KU backed Scholl for the premiership, inaugurating a five-year era of radical economic globalization and the rapid deregulation of cross-border trade.
The 2004 election was also bad for the Kruhlstutt left. Under the leadership of Leonora Kist, the Sovereign Workers’ League won a massive 39.4% of the popular vote and 141 seats, easily making them the largest party in the Royal Diet. However, the electorate’s mandate was instantly subverted. The conservative coalition that was formed nearly tore the SWL apart, requiring Kist to spend the next three years desperately preventing her radicalized base from abandoning democracy entirely.
Scholl spent his term negotiating the historic 2006 Import Tariff Revision Act alongside Kresimirian diplomat Luka Tot. This act drastically lowered border taxes, massively enriching Kruhlstutt’s tech sector.
