Aland is the capital city and federal seat of the Alandir Confederacy. Nestled high in the Severni mountain range at the northern edge of the Nastavak continent, it is a modest, highly pristine alpine city that serves as the administrative heart of the Confederacy’s decentralized government.
Unlike the sprawling, heavily centralized mega-capital of Sinj in the neighboring Divine Republic of Kresimiria, Aland functions primarily as a neutral meeting ground for the twelve sovereign Cantons. Renowned for its historic architecture, purist alpine tourism, and precision clockwork and optics guilds, Aland is widely considered one of the wealthiest and most secure cities on the continent.
Geography and Climate
Aland is situated at an elevation of 1,450 meters in a steep alpine valley. The pristine, alpine character of the capital is anchored by the Kambel River, which flows directly through the city center. Originating just a few valleys away at the high-altitude dams of Kambelquell, the glacial waters of the Kambel provide the city with its famous, crystal-clear aesthetic before continuing its long descent southward into Kresimirian territory.
Because of its high altitude, Aland experiences long, severe winters with heavy snowfall, and short, temperate summers. This forbidding geography historically served as a natural fortress, protecting the city from the expansionist ambitions of the Vosti Empire and later Kresimirian warlords.
In the 21st century, the city’s famous pristine air quality has come under threat. Industrial smog and toxic particulate matter generated by SeverMin mining operations in Bistrica (District IV) frequently drift north through the mountain passes, settling in the Aland valley. This environmental degradation has become the primary source of diplomatic tension between Aland and Sinj.
Government and Political Role
As a Directorial Cantonal Confederation, the Alandir state does not concentrate absolute power in its capital. However, Aland is home to the Federal Diet (the confederational parliament) and the Federal Council (the seven-member rotating executive body).
The Federal Diet building, a centuries-old stone fortress retrofitted with modern technological amenities, is the site where the Cantons negotiate mutual defense, trade, and border policies. Because Alandir policy dictates “Armed Neutrality,” the city lacks the massive military-industrial complexes seen in Kresimirian cities like Novi Otonik. Instead, Aland houses the strategic command of the citizen militia, which manages the heavily fortified mountain passes leading south into District VI (Viskogorje) and District IV (Severnivaraje).
The 1919 “Closed Gates” Resolution
Aland’s most defining historical moment occurred within the chambers of the Federal Diet during the Kresimirian Unification War. In 1919, Kresimirian General Dominik Loncar sent an envoy to Aland, demanding military transit rights through the southern Cantons to flank his enemies. The Federal Council famously issued the “Close the Gates” order from Aland, mobilizing the militia to the border and forcing Loncar to abandon his northern strategy.
Economy and Culture
Aland’s economy is highly specialized, relying on low-volume, high-margin industries rather than heavy manufacturing.
It is the global headquarters of Ravel Dalin, the continent’s most exclusive luxury watchmaker. The brand’s heavily guarded, pristine atelier in the city center requires a personal invitation to enter. The frequent arrival of heavily tinted, armored convoys carrying the most corrupt and powerful figures from Sinj, Creuzholz, and San Branik to purchase these absurdly expensive timepieces stands in stark, cynical contrast to the city’s self-proclaimed status as a purist, egalitarian alpine sanctuary.
- Precision Engineering: The city is globally recognized for its historic guilds, which produce elite optical lenses, surveying equipment, and luxury clockwork. Many of these components are ironically purchased by the Council for Internal Affairs in Kresimiria to build border surveillance drones, despite the diplomatic chill between the two states.
- Alpine Tourism: Aland attracts old-money elites, diplomats, and “purist” alpine sports enthusiasts. It actively markets itself as the antithesis to the gaudy, casino-driven ski resorts of Kresimirian Lipovljana.
- A Haven for Exiles: Due to its strict neutrality and robust freedom of speech laws, Aland has long been a sanctuary for political dissidents and intellectual exiles. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it hosted Sebastien Novak, the reformist grandson of the Kresimirian founder. Novak spent nine years in the city studying its municipal structure, which he later used as the basis for his political manifesto, The Cantonal Blueprint. This text has since become foundational reading for the Northern Power party, whose leader, Syv Iric, frequently cites Aland’s governance as an ideal model.
Notable People
While Aland is famous for its strict communal regulations, these exact policies occasionally drive its more capitalistic citizens into exile. The most prominent example is Enej Palmstruch, who abandoned the city in 1986 to pursue unregulated wealth in Kresimiria, eventually becoming the CEO of the mining giant SeverMin. In a bitter irony frequently pointed out by Alandir diplomats, Palmstruch now oversees the very industrial extraction that pumps toxic smog directly back into the pristine alpine valley of his birth.
