Milan Vanc is a Kresimirian politician who served as Mayor of Bistrica from 2008 to 2016, representing Northern Power.
Early life and background
Vanc was born and raised in Bistrica, the industrial capital of District IV (Severnivaraje). He came of age during the long mayoral tenure of Joakim Hedstrom and the chaotic final years of Darko Horvat, witnessing firsthand how northern mining communities swung between Blue Dawn centralism and NP regionalism. Before entering municipal politics he worked in the timber cooperatives that supplied Republic Rail and the pulp mills around the Upper Bistrica basin — experience that later shaped his modernization agenda.
Mayoralty (2008–2016)
Vanc won the 2008 mayoral election in the wake of the 2006 Import Tariff Revision Act, which devastated local mining wages when cheap Kaskivian gas and Kruhlstutt manufactured goods undercut SeverMin contracts. He channeled voter anger into a modernization platform, promising to pivot Bistrica’s economy toward timber processing and digital media ventures like Northfocus, winning a comfortable majority against a weakened Blue Dawn.
He succeeded Joakim Hedstrom, who had defeated the scandal-plagued incumbent Darko Horvat in 2000. As mayor, Vanc expanded municipal subsidies for sawmill upgrades, negotiated fibre backhaul with the University of Pulma, and positioned Northfocus as a regional alternative to Sinj-dominated broadcasters. Critics in Blue Dawn accused him of abandoning miners; NP’s federal leadership, led by Syv Iric, defended the pivot as necessary diversification after the tariff shock.
Vanc announced his retirement ahead of the 2016 election, clearing the way for combative lawyer Ludvig Aspelund to capture the mayoralty on a “Total Non-Compliance” platform against federal surveillance mandates.
