Kresimiria Oberskrad

Oberskrad

Oberskrad is a heavily fortified border town situated in the southern reaches of the Alandir Confederacy. Perched precariously on a sheer alpine ridge above the Severni Mountain Range, the town controls one of only three legal overland road crossings into the Divine Republic of Kresimiria. Uniquely for an Alandir settlement, Oberskrad’s population is predominantly High Kresi-speaking, reflecting centuries of cultural overlap with the southern valleys.

Today, the town functions primarily as a strict, militarized customs checkpoint, enforcing the Confederacy’s policy of “Armed Neutrality.” In recent decades, Oberskrad has become the literal front line of an ongoing international environmental dispute, as its municipal government is forced to manage the severe diplomatic and public health headaches caused by industrial pollution drifting upward from Kresimirian extraction sites.

Geography and Demographics

Oberskrad is built at an elevation of 1,720 meters, clinging to the northern face of the Severni Pass. The town’s architecture is dense and utilitarian, designed to withstand both brutal alpine winters and potential military incursions. Due to the extreme topography, the town possesses only one main arterial road, which switchbacks violently down the mountain into Kresimirian District IV (Severnivaraje).

Linguistically, Oberskrad is an anomaly within the Confederacy. While the federal capital of Aland primarily conducts business in Alandic, over 85% of Oberskrad’s population speaks High Kresi natively. However, unlike citizens of the Divine Republic—who are strictly policed by the 1925 Standard Kresi Act—the residents of Oberskrad speak an older, unregulated dialect of the language and fiercely maintain their Alandir political identity, rejecting the centralist, authoritarian culture of Sinj.

The Oberskrad Gate: Checkpoint and Customs

Oberskrad’s primary economic and political function is operating the Oberskrad Gate, a massive customs and military checkpoint. It is one of only three recognized transit points through the Severni Range.

The Alandir cantonal militia maintains a highly visible, heavily armed presence in the town. The mountain tunnels leading into Oberskrad are rigged with pre-installed demolition charges, a remnant of the Confederacy’s defensive strategy during the 1918–1921 Unification War.

Every vehicle, cargo truck, and individual crossing the border is subjected to exhaustive searches. The customs officers in Oberskrad are primarily tasked with intercepting illegal Kresimirian surveillance technology, untaxed luxury goods, and political dissidents attempting to flee the authoritarian south. Across the heavily marked “neutral zone,” the Kresimirian side of the border is patrolled by the Council for Internal Affairs (CIA) and automated drone swarms manufactured by Otonik Ordnance, creating a tense, highly securitized atmosphere.

Environmental Tensions and SeverMin

In the 21st century, Oberskrad has suffered deeply from its geographic proximity to Kresimiria’s northern industrial belt. The town sits directly above Bistrica, the headquarters of the Kresimirian mining monopoly SeverMin.

Due to the prevailing thermal updrafts in the Severni valleys, toxic particulate matter, heavy metal dust, and industrial smog generated by SeverMin’s open-pit mines are funneled directly up the mountain passes, settling over Oberskrad. This has caused severe spikes in respiratory illnesses among the town’s population.

The Oberskrad municipal council frequently issues furious diplomatic cables to Kresimirian authorities and SeverMin CEO Enej Palmstruch, demanding ecological reparations. Because Kresimirian state media (via TRK) censors domestic reporting on industrial pollution, eco-socialist politicians from the Northern Power party, such as Syv Iric, often rely on independent air-quality data published by the Oberskrad cantonal government to publicly attack the Blue Dawn establishment’s environmental record.
