Adnan Sitar (born 1986) is a Kresimirian politician and health administrator who serves as a Senator for District I (Sinj). A member of the Civic Renewal Front (CRF), his election in 2022 marked a historic upset, as he became only the second non-establishment politician in the Republic’s history to win a seat in the capital district (the first being Antonio Labas in 1982).
Sitar represents the social-liberal wing of the CRF. Unlike the strict economic libertarians of the party’s past, Sitar advocates for efficient but compassionate state intervention. He rose to national prominence as the architect of the 2023 Harm Reduction Act, which decriminalized drug possession and established safe consumption sites.
Early Life and Education
Adnan Sitar was born in 1986 in Klostar, a mid-sized market town in District V. Raised in a lower-middle-class family during the economic stagnation of the late Sanjakorin era, he witnessed the impact of bureaucratic mismanagement on local communities.
He attended Vijrje City University (VCU), graduating in 2008 with a degree in Business and Accounting. During his time at university, he became fascinated by local politics, citing the then-Senator for District V, Florijan Kostic, as a key inspiration. Sitar admired Kostic’s emphasis on fiscal responsibility and clean governance, though he would later diverge from Kostic’s hardline libertarianism regarding social welfare.
Professional Career
Local Government (2008–2016)
After graduating, Sitar worked as an accountant before becoming a budget manager for several local municipal councils in Moskiprovac. He gained a reputation for uncovering waste in local procurement contracts, often clashing with Blue Dawn loyalists in the district administration.
The Council for Health (2016–2021)
In 2016, Sitar moved to the capital, Sinj, to take a position as a senior administrator within the Council for Health. Working inside the “Citadel of Life,” he became disillusioned with the inequities of the healthcare system. He witnessed firsthand how resources were funneled into the “Gold Zone” hospitals for the elite while rural clinics crumbled. He also grew frustrated with the punitive approach to the growing addiction crisis in the capital’s poorer boroughs, which he viewed as a failure of public health policy rather than a criminal issue.
Political Career
The 2022 Election Victory
In 2021, Sitar resigned from the Council for Health to run for office. He was selected by CRF leader Vesna Horvatin to contest District I (Sinj).
The capital had long been the impregnable fortress of the Blue Dawn establishment. However, Sitar ran a hyper-local campaign targeting the “South Bank” voters—working-class residents of Sinj who felt left behind by Ari Stov’s tech-focused economy. Sitar campaigned on “Compassionate Efficiency,” promising to fix the broken social services he had once administered.
In the 2022 election, while Blue Dawn incumbent Magdalena Zuvic retained the first seat, Sitar shocked political observers by capturing the second seat with 28.8% of the vote, defeating the second Blue Dawn candidate. This victory broke the establishment’s monopoly on the capital for the first time in thirty years.
The Harm Reduction Act
Sitar’s defining legislative achievement came in his first year. In May 2023, he proposed the Harm Reduction Act. Drawing on his experience in the Council for Health, he argued that the “War on Drugs” was a fiscal black hole.
Sitar built an unlikely coalition to pass the bill. He secured the support of Northern Power (appealing to their social justice values) and managed to convince Ari Stov that the policy would clean up the streets of Sinj. Despite fierce opposition from religious conservatives like Malik Kondratiev, the bill passed, establishing Sitar as one of the most effective legislators in the CRF.
He has formed a “Progressive Bloc” with Civic Renewal Front senators Illes Mehic and Northern Power senator Chwa Spas to advocate for social issues, including LGBTQ+ rights and the reform of the Council for Education.
Political Positions
Sitar identifies as a Social Liberal.
- Healthcare: He supports increased funding for the Council for Health but demands rigorous auditing to route funds to underserved areas.
- Civil Rights: He is a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and has called for the repeal of the Faith Restriction Clause.
- Economy: While fiscally conservative regarding waste, he supports a robust safety net, arguing that “a citizen cannot contribute to the economy if they are dead or destitute.”
