The Alandir Confederacy (Alandic: Alandir Bund) is a sovereign state located to the north of the Divine Republic of Kresimiria. It shares a rugged, mountainous border with the districts of Severnivaraje and Viskogorje. Its capital city and seat of the cantonal confederation is Aland.
Occupying the northern peaks of Nastavak, the Confederacy serves as the geographical âroofâ of the continent. Its control over the headwaters of the major river systems gives it disproportionate leverage over its southern neighbor, Kresimiria.
While a glance at a map of Nastavak suggests the Confederacy possesses a massive northern coastline, the reality is entirely prohibitive. The Severni mountain range does not slope down to beaches; it simply runs out of land, dropping thousands of feet down sheer, freezing cliffs directly into violent, unnavigable oceans. Because there are no natural harbors and the waters are too rough for shipping, Alandir remains functionally landlocked, perfectly preserving the cantonsâ status as an impenetrable, isolated âMountain Fortress.â
Characterized by its extreme mountainous terrain and decentralized political system, Alandir is known for its centuries-old policy of âArmed Neutrality.â It is composed of twelve semi-autonomous Cantons that operate under a system of direct democracy.
Relations with Kresimiria are historically distant and occasionally tense. The Alandir government strictly polices the high mountain passes of the Severni Range, and the nation serves as a physical barrier isolating the Kresimirian north from the rest of the continent. While the two nations are not enemies, the Confederacyâs refusal to engage in military or deep political alliances often frustrates the centralist ambitions of the Sinj government.
History
The Mountain Fortress (Pre-1918)
Throughout the era of the Vosti Empire, the Alandir Cantons maintained a unique status as a tributary protectorate. While technically within the Vosti sphere of influence, the Empire rarely interfered in Alandir internal affairs due to the difficulty of projecting power into the high Alps.
The Closed Gates (1919)
The defining moment in Kresimirian-Alandir relations occurred during the Kresimirian Unification War. In 1919, General Dominik Loncar of the Centralist Faction requested military access through the southern Cantons to flank the Confederacy forces in Ravna Skrad.
The Alandir Federal Diet refused, issuing the order to âClose the Gates.â They mobilized their citizen militia to the border passes. Unwilling to fight a two-front war against a dug-in mountain force, Loncar was forced to abandon his flanking maneuver and engage in the bloody winter siege of the central plains instead. This event cemented Alandirâs reputation as an immovable neutral power.
Modern Era
In the 21st century, the Confederacy has clashed with Kresimiria over environmental issues. The industrial pollution from SeverMin operations in Bistrica frequently drifts north across the border, leading to diplomatic protests from Aland.
Despite its strict isolationism, the Confederacyâs unique Directorial Cantonal system has deeply influenced reformist thinkers in neighboring authoritarian states. Most notably, Kresimirian author and philanthropist Sebastien Novak lived in Aland for nine years, using the Confederacyâs localized democratic structure as the basis for his bestselling 2002 book, The Cantonal Blueprint, which proposed applying Alandir-style decentralization to Kresimiriaâs fractured districts.
The physical manifestation of Alandirâs isolationism is most evident at its southern border crossings. The most heavily fortified of these is Oberskrad, a precarious alpine town that controls the primary highway into Kresimiria. Manned by the cantonal militia, the Oberskrad Gate is rigged with anti-tank defenses and explosive tunnel charges, ensuring that the Confederacy maintains absolute physical control over who and what enters the high mountains from the authoritarian south.
Government and Politics
The Alandir Confederacy operates as a loose union of sovereign Cantons.
- Decentralization: There is no single Head of State comparable to the Divine Chancellor. Executive power is held by a seven-member Federal Council that rotates the presidency annually.
- Inspiration for Northern Power: The Alandir political modelâemphasizing local autonomy and communal resource ownershipâis frequently cited by Northern Power leader Syv Iric as an example of successful regionalism.
Economy
The economy is highly specialized and protectionist.
- Hydroelectricity: Alandir controls the headwaters of several major rivers, including tributaries of the Kambel. It exports surplus electricity to Kresimiriaâs National Energy grid during the summer months.
- Precision Manufacturing: The Cantons are famous for optics and clockwork.
- Tourism: Alandir ski resorts compete directly with those in Lipovljana. While Lipovljana caters to the âNew Moneyâ of Sinj with casinos and nightlife, Alandir markets itself as a destination for âpuristâ alpine sports, attracting a wealthier, quieter clientele.
The economic backbone of the Confederacy relies heavily on its geographic mastery over the continentâs water systems. The epicenter of this power is the town of Kambelquell, a fortified alpine municipality that houses the massive dams controlling the Kambel River headwaters. Operating under cantonal autonomy, the local government of Kambelquell generates immense wealth by exporting surplus hydroelectricity southward during the summer melt, functioning as the indispensable, independent battery for the northern continent.
The cantonsâ historic policy of âArmed Neutralityâ extends deep into their corporate philosophy. By refusing to engage in the ideological warfare that constantly ravages the rest of the continent, Alandir has cultivated a massive, highly lucrative luxury sector that caters to all sides simultaneously. The undisputed crown jewel of this economy is Ravel Dalin, a family-owned horology brand based in the capital. By strictly ignoring international sanctions and the horrific human rights abuses of their clientele, Ravel Dalin happily sells multi-million-Krone mechanical watches to corrupt Kresimirian oligarchs, Kaskivian gas barons, and Kruhlstutt tech CEOs alike, perfectly encapsulating the Confederacyâs willingness to look the other way as long as the gold clears the border.
Borders
The border is defined by the Severni and Vjetar mountain ranges.
- Crossings: There are only three legal road crossings between the two nations, all of which are heavily monitored.
- Smuggling: Despite the strict controls, the rugged terrain makes the border a haven for smugglers moving goods that bypass Kresimirian tariffs, though on a much smaller scale than the Kruhlstutt border in the west.
