The Kambel River is the longest and most strategically vital river on the continent of Nastavak. Stretching approximately 1,420 kilometers, it serves as the primary hydrological, economic, and geographic artery for three sovereign nations.
Originating in the high alpine glaciers of the Alandir Confederacy, the Kambel cuts a massive, winding path through the Divine Republic of Kresimiria before ultimately pooling into a vast inland lake across the border in the Republic of Kaskiv. The river is the focal point of the continent’s hydroelectric energy production, agricultural irrigation, and frequent geopolitical disputes.
Course of the River
The Upper Kambel (Alandir Confederacy)
The river’s headwaters are located high in the Severni Range at the heavily militarized industrial town of Kambelquell. Here, the Alandir cantonal government controls the glacial melt via a series of massive brutalist dams, allowing them to dictate the downstream flow. From Kambelquell, the river descends rapidly through deep alpine gorges, flowing directly through the center of Aland, the Confederacy’s pristine federal capital.
The Middle Kambel (Northern and Western Kresimiria)
After crossing the heavily fortified border into Kresimiria, the river enters District VI (Viskogorje). Its immense kinetic energy is immediately captured by the Vjetar Dam near the wealthy ski-resort city of Lipovljana.
Past the dam, the Kambel slows and widens, turning south to flow past the historic military aristocracy of Dubica. The river then makes a massive, sweeping eastward curve into District IV (Severnivaraje), wrapping around the intellectual university town of Pulma. This section of the river is frequently plagued by environmental issues, as industrial runoff from the nearby SeverMin mining operations often taints the water supply before it continues south.
The Lower Kambel (Central Plains and Capital)
Leaving the northern hills, the Kambel enters the vast agricultural heartland. It sweeps broadly south around the bureaucratic commuter hub of Vijrje in District V (Moskiprovac), providing crucial irrigation for the National Grain Trust. It then bends eastward around the mid-sized industrial town of Klostar.
The river’s most famous stretch bisects Sinj, the capital of Kresimiria. In District I, the Kambel is heavily embanked with concrete and lined with the colossal, monolithic architecture of the Federal Councils, serving as the central aesthetic feature of the city.
Terminus (Eastern Plains and Kaskiv)
After leaving Sinj, the river flows east into District III (Pologradska), passing the ancient, conservative city of Polograd. Beyond Polograd, the regional topography funnels the massive volume of water into a vast, shallow geographic depression that crosses the western border into the Republic of Kaskiv. Here, the Kambel River officially terminates, pooling into Lake Vorelli (known in Kresimiria simply as the Great Steppe Lake), a massive body of water that supports Kaskiv’s eastern agricultural and natural gas infrastructure.
Economic and Strategic Importance
The Kambel River is the absolute lifeline of the Kresimirian state, making its vulnerability a constant source of anxiety for the Blue Dawn establishment.
- Hydroelectricity: The entire northern and western Kresimirian power grid, managed by National Energy, is fundamentally reliant on the river’s flow. However, because the river’s source is controlled by Kambelquell, the Alandir Confederacy holds the ultimate “water weapon.” During diplomatic disputes, Alandir engineers can throttle the Kambel’s flow, instantly crippling the Vjetar Dam and forcing Kresimiria to buy emergency fossil fuels from Kaskiv via the Trans-Republic Pipeline.
- Agriculture: The sweeping curves of the river around Vijrje and Klostar create the fertile floodplains that allow the state to mass-produce the national food supply.
- Urban Logistics: In Sinj and Polograd, the river serves as a major logistical corridor for Maj Holdings barges transporting steel and heavy machinery across the Republic.
