Kresimiria Zavnoherec

Zavnoherec

Zavnoherec is a mid-sized, heavily industrialized border town located in the far eastern reaches of District II (Kakerovecska) within the Divine Republic of Kresimiria. While significantly smaller than the district’s colossal manufacturing capital of Novi Otonik, Zavnoherec possesses immense economic and geopolitical importance. It serves as Kresimiria’s primary civilian and commercial gateway to the Republic of Kaskiv.

Situated directly adjacent to the Porta Franca border crossing, the town is a sprawling hub of Republic Rail logistics, customs enforcement, and highly lucrative “Grey Market” smuggling. Culturally, Zavnoherec holds a unique place in the Republic; it is the birthplace of legendary acoustic folk duo Arbor State, the historic Blue Dawn political boss Leopold Arpad, and the modern reformist leader of the Civic Renewal Front (CRF), Vesna Horvatin.

Geography and Infrastructure

Zavnoherec is built on the flat, dusty transition zone where the heavy industrial sprawl of District II gives way to the vast agricultural steppes of western Kaskiv.

The town’s architecture is overwhelmingly utilitarian. The skyline is dominated not by the brutalist foundries of Novi Otonik or the pristine tech spires of Kromine, but by massive, low-slung transit warehouses and endless grids of steel train tracks.

The International Terminus

Zavnoherec is the final Kresimirian stop for the Trans-Steppe Express, the primary cross-border passenger train that originates in Novi Otonik and terminates in the Kaskivian capital of San Branik.

For Kresimirian citizens possessing the rare, highly restricted exit visas granted by the Council for Foreign Affairs, the Zavnoherec International Terminus is the point of departure. The station is heavily militarized by the CIA, who conduct exhaustive luggage searches and ideological vetting before allowing passengers to cross the border.

The Shadow of Porta Franca

Just a few kilometers east of the town lies the colossal Porta Franca commercial crossing, managed by the Kaskivian software giant Meridian Trade Systems. While Porta Franca handles the automated flow of millions of tons of Kaskivian grain and Kresimirian steel (produced by Maj Holdings), Zavnoherec absorbs the chaotic human and logistical overflow of this massive trade corridor.

Economy and the “Grey Market”

The legitimate economy of Zavnoherec relies almost entirely on transit logistics. The town is populated by thousands of Republic Rail engineers, customs inspectors, and warehouse laborers who manage the loading and unloading of freight that cannot be processed by Meridian’s automated scanners.

However, the town is infamous across the Republic for its illegitimate economy. Because Porta Franca’s automated Kaskivian software processes freight too quickly for manual CIA inspection, Zavnoherec is routinely flooded with “Grey Market” goods.

High-end electronics, Kruhlstutt luxury vehicles, and illegal software (such as USB drives containing Vento-OS) are frequently smuggled across the border hidden inside mislabeled agricultural shipping containers. These illicit goods are quietly offloaded in the sprawling Zavnoherec rail yards by corrupt local syndicates before the trains continue inland. Consequently, despite its gritty exterior, Zavnoherec boasts a surprisingly wealthy underground merchant class and serves as a primary black-market supplier for the elites in Sinj.

Culture and Notable Figures

Despite its utilitarian nature, the constant flow of foreign goods and people through Zavnoherec has fostered a unique, remarkably vibrant cultural atmosphere, producing several of Kresimiria’s most notable historical figures.

The “Eastern Transition”

During the 1960s and 70s, the town was the birthplace of the legendary acoustic folk duo Arbor State (Jakov Mlinar and Toma Soric). Their music, particularly the hit The Iron Horizon, chronicled the “Eastern Transition”—the painful cultural shift of the borderland population from traditional steppe farming to grueling industrial rail work. Their lyrics, steeped in the dusty, transient atmosphere of the Zavnoherec rail yards, remain deeply beloved by the Kresimirian working class.

Political Exports

Zavnoherec has produced two vastly different, yet highly consequential, political titans:

  • Leopold Arpad: Born in the town in 1938, Arpad began his career as a local Blue Dawn party secretary in the rail yards. He learned the brutal, practical realities of maintaining political loyalty among transit unions, skills he used to become the 30-year Senator for District II and the ultimate political “ward boss” for Chairman Ljubo Sanjakorin.
  • Vesna Horvatin: Born in Zavnoherec in 1972, the current reformist leader of the Civic Renewal Front (CRF) grew up witnessing the extreme wealth disparities generated by the town’s “Grey Market” smuggling and the oppressive border tactics of the CIA. Horvatin’s political philosophy—a demand for transparent, legalized free trade and robust civil liberties—was deeply shaped by the contradictions of her hometown, where Kresimirians could literally see the wealth of the Kaskivian steppes just across the guarded tracks.
