Tamara Velar was a Kresimirian politician who served as a Senator for District VII (Ravna Skrad) from 1962 until 1972 as a member of Blue Dawn. She was elected in the first post-treaty general election and served alongside Davor Banit of the Sons of Kresimir, before retiring ahead of the 1972 election. Ante Dumanovic, a longtime Blue Dawn organizer in Ravna Skrad, succeeded her in the district’s senior seat.
Election and co-senator
Velar entered the Assembly through the 1962 election, the first contest held after the 1961 Treaty of Brod Moravice. She won 29.8% in District VII, topping a crowded field that included CRF and Vjetrusa challengers filling the vacuum left by Jelena Savlek’s retirement. Banit held the district’s other seat for the Sons of Kresimir with 21.4%, continuing the east-west split between Blue Dawn modernizers and Decelska-aligned religious conservatives.
The Velar–Banit pairing proved stable if ideologically awkward: Velar whipped votes for Chair Leon Rukavin’s treaty implementation agenda, while Banit supplied the religious-nationalist cover that kept SoK voters from defecting to Vjetrusa.
Tenure and retirement
Through the 1960s Velar focused on agricultural subsidy legislation and cross-district rail links for Ravna Skrad’s grain exporters. She was a quiet supporter of Ante Brov’s early reform gestures but never joined the party’s liberal wing publicly.
Neither Velar nor Banit sought re-election in 1972. Dumanovic captured the Blue Dawn seat with 27.0%, while CRF leader Mia Marija Pavlovic won the district’s other seat — a realignment that shifted District VII toward liberal–establishment cooperation for the next two decades.
Velar spent her retirement in Sinj and died in 1994.
