The June 1963 District VIII special election was held in Zahodecelska to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of Senator Dragan Senar of Vjetrusa. Senar was killed in June 1963 while attempting to mediate a strike at a manufacturing plant in Cetingrad, five months after the death of party founder Dominik Loncar had already triggered the January 1963 by-election in District VI.
The contest carried wider Assembly stakes. Senar had served as Vjetrusa’s de facto leader during Loncar’s final illness, and his death removed the party’s last experienced western senator within a single calendar year. By mid-1963, Pavel Iric had completed the merger of the Bistrice People’s Party into refounded Northern Power, and trade unionist Dalibor Pralinovic — who had placed third in the district in 1962 — stood as the merged party’s first candidate in Zahodecelska. A Vjetrusa hold would have preserved two western nationalist seats alongside Senator Haret Trn in Viskogorje; a Northern Power gain would give the labour-regionalist coalition its first Senate foothold in the industrial west.
Candidates
Dalibor Pralinovic stood for Northern Power. Born in Cetingrad in 1925, Pralinovic had spent his career in the steel foundries and had organised strike committees that formed the core of Northern Power’s western network. After placing third behind Senar and CRF incumbent Sonja Duval in the 1962 election, he entered the special election as the standard-bearer of the newly merged NP–BPP coalition negotiated by Pavel Iric. His platform combined workers’ rights legislation with regional development grants for the Cetingrad–Varazdinske industrial corridor.
Mario Zulim was Vjetrusa’s candidate. A logistics coordinator and local party operative in Zahodecelska, Zulim was selected after Senar’s death to contest a seat the party had held since 1952. Vjetrusa materials framed the race as a defence of Senar’s nationalist legacy against the rising socialist vote in Cetingrad. Zulim campaigned on industrial protectionism and opposition to the Treaty-era concessions that Senar had reluctantly accepted as acting party leader.
Zdravko Belobrajdic stood for the Sons of Kresimir, campaigning on religious conservatism and a harder line against the Brod Moravice settlement than Vjetrusa was willing to articulate publicly. His candidacy split the right-wing vote in a district where the Sons had not held a Senate seat since the 1950s.
Drazen Vinkovic contested the seat for the Civic Renewal Front. The CRF’s Zahodecelska organisation had held one of the district’s two seats through Duval since 1942; Vinkovic ran as a Treaty loyalist emphasising civil order and cross-community governance, but attracted limited support amid the labour-nationalist polarisation of the campaign.

Breakdown by District
District VIII (Zahodecelska)
Pralinovic won 34.2% of the vote to Zulim’s 33.8% — a margin of 0.4 points and the closest Senate contest recorded in the district until the 1992 general election. Contemporary returns attributed Pralinovic’s victory to heavy turnout in Cetingrad’s steel wards and student support channelled from Marin University Varazdinske (MUV), while Zulim carried rural Vjetrusa strongholds in the district’s northern townships.
Belobrajdic (16.5%) and Vinkovic (15.5%) together polled 32.0%, and post-election commentary in the Kresimirian Herald argued that the divided conservative and liberal tickets had prevented either from overtaking the top two finishers. Pralinovic became the first socialist senator elected in District VIII and Northern Power’s first seat in the western industrial belt; Zulim, who would later operate a smuggling network from the Valkari States, left electoral politics after the defeat. The result left Vjetrusa with a single Senate seat nationwide — held by the newly elected Trn in Viskogorje — and confirmed Trn as party leader by default when the caucus met in July 1963.
